Short Story

Family: Deceased

It was 1190 when it happened...though she was too young to remember such events back then...

Her name used to be Jessa Sudo, and she was 8 years old at the time...Her parents lived in a quaint little town, quiet, nearly invisible. Most didn't even know it was a town until they'd entered it along that beaten path that ran right through the center of the small town...Scythengard.

The house she lived in wasn't that small, but it held her mother, father and her three brothers rather comfortably, if not somewhat smothering at times. It was a shack by most standards, the shingles were falling off the sides of the house, the roof collapsed two times in a year, and it was always cold. But, her father did all he could to keep his family warm in the winter months, which everyone in town knew. They took pity on the family of five, giving them the rations they would need just to survive. It probably explained why Jessa was too small, even for an eight year old. Her brothers were all older, the twin boys were 17, and her eldest brother, Kaden, was 19, and all fended for themselves in the woods, killing what they could and bringing it home, considering their father worked his hands to the bone for barely enough money to make the rent. The mother, of course, took care of the house, cooking, cleaning, anything she could do to make it more comforting for the family.

Jessa, as said, was a very small girl, stature among the things malnutrition altered. She was no taller than the countertops, barely able to reach above them. Her arms were slender, barely any muscle tone at all, and her skin was pale, transparent, one could see her blue and thin veins just beneath the surface of her flesh. Her hair was almost as white as her skin, making her skin, most called her the ghost child. But, unlike the demons they spoke of, she was kind, gentle, and she had eyes as blue as the deepest parts of the ocean...one would be calm just looking into those orbs...

She wasn't the playful type either, as far as most kids were concerned. When she was allowed out to play, she would just sit behind the trees, playing with the strings that hung so graciously beyond her tattered skirts. She hated being outside for long periods of time, especially when the other kids in the neighborhood were around. They weren't the nicest children around, and given her situation, she found it best to just avoid those people. Jessa learned at a very young age that being alone was the best thing that she could ask for...

It was a rather mild day when it happened to her...the blossoms on her favorite tree had just started to bloom. The pink and red flowers on the branches swayed so nicely in the humid breeze, one would hardly notice any kind of distortion in society by sitting beneath such a lovely creation from Mother Nature. Jessa, after doing her morning chores and getting dressed in her tattered pink dress, decided to prance down the hill past her house and go visit her tree, at least, she claimed it without caring who wanted it. It was her tree.

She'd gotten there fairly quickly, not minding for a minute the grass and dirt that started to gather between her bare toes. She just pranced along, carefree, and too poor to know otherwise. When Jessa made it to the tree, there were of course a few boys waiting for her at the trunk of the tree, waiting to taunt her as she got there. "What are you doing here...? You need money to come to this spot...!!" one would say, arms crossed, followed by others, "...yeah, you don't make enough to be here...get away!! This is our property!"

Jessa couldn't believe it, no one knew about her spot, she was always hiding it, and the kids saying that just made her feel more like she didn't deserve to live. "...why are you guys being so mean to me...? W-what did I ever do to you...?" before she could answer any further, she soon heard noises, like the police were in town. "What the...." she trailed off, ignoring the boys and rushing back into town. She didn't know what was wrong, and her brothers wouldn't be home until sunset. She had a bad feeling in her stomach from all of this...she was young, but far from stupid, like most of the children her age. She was taught to sense with her heart and mind, to always be clear about her choices...and now...she was sensing that something was wrong...

As she rushed into the town square, she saw that there were indeed police forces rushing towards the city...but why her house...? What did her family do that was so bad...? She ran around the back of the house, crawling underneath the porch to watch as the police entered her home. They were all dressed in black, weapons up, barreling into the house. She tried to keep quiet, even as the men started to shout.

"Where are your sons...?" one of them could be heard saying to her parents.

"Our sons are out...they always are..." her father said, holding her mother close.

"On your hands and knees...now..." the main one said, aiming his weapon at the two.

They didn't comply, "...we've done nothing wrong..." and before they could say another word, the police jumped on them, starting to beat the couple to death. Jessa tried to hold her screaming in, even as the blood started to creep through the floorboards, dripping onto the damp earth beneath the house. She wanted to cry, waiting, biding her time until the police left, and to her surprise, they did. She couldn't move though, she was frozen by fear...cramped beneath the floor of her poorly built house, crimson fluid dripping onto her hair and face, making her look like she was crying blood. She was stunned silent too, and seeing something like she had just witnessed, it was no surprise that she wasn't scared literally to death.

It'd been hours...or so she thought, before she watched the sun go down from under the house. Her three brothers, as she'd thought, came home to the carnage that was laid upon the floor for them. They immediately went into a frenzy, blaming each other and bickering back and forth. Until Kaden, the oldest, noticed, "...where's Jessa...?" he looked around the whole house, rummaging through every hiding place and screaming for her.

Jessa, hearing her name, snapped out of it, crawling out from underneath the house, shambling her way into the living room, tears welled up in her eyes, blood all over her body, "....Kaden...they took mommy...and daddy...." she said shakily, collapsing and crumpling to her knees on the floor, hunched forward and resting on her hands.

Kaden shook his head, taking no time at all to pick his little sister up, signaling for the front door, “Come on guys…we have to get out of here…” he said, rubbing Jessa’s head softly, trying to calm her down. He was whispering into her ear, attempting the same trick their parents had used on her, a soft song to calm the beast. “Guys we have no time for bullshit, let’s go…!” he rushed out of the house, taking a moment to look back and forth, making sure it was clear before he ran to their horses. With Jessa in his grasp, he leapt up onto his equine, grabbing the reigns and making sure that Jessa wouldn’t fall off, “Daren and Leo, come on! Hya!” he spurred his horse, it reared back and he started to leave town, the twins soon following him. Kaden was headed the only place the foursome would be safe from the terror of the town, and that was the mountains. At least there they’d be able to eat…

Hours after they arrived at the mountainous path, Kaden discussed with his brothers the possible things that their parents were in trouble for, and when they came up short, they decided to stay out of the town for a while, most likely forever it would end up being. Kaden sighed, looking at his sister. She’d been passed out for the last hour or so, occasionally shifting on the horse to get more comfortable. He smiled softly at her, lifting her up and dismounting the horse, taking the reigns and leading the three to the cavern that the boys spent most of their time in after a few kills.

It was a miraculous cavern indeed, most would consider it a geode, by scientific terms, because the entire inside was naturally formed with a beautiful sapphire-like mineral. It was awfully dark on the inside, and when one of the twins lit up his torch, the prisms of light danced around the inside of the cave, the luminescence of the torch penetrated the crystals, sparking rainbows of blue, purple and pink around the area they were headed to rest, the smoothest section at least.

“Finally…some peace in our day…” Daren said, taking over for his brother and sitting down with the sleeping Jessa, stroking her hair idly and listening to her rather soft purring in her sleep. He smiled looking up to Kaden, who was pacing back and forth around the fire they were making. “Kay, what are we going to do…what if the police are looking for us…or worse…Jessa…we won’t be able to hold them off if they get their hands on her--”

Leo quickly cut his brother off with a swift slap to the face, which disturbed Jessa only the littlest bit, “…you have no idea what you’re talking about…why would they want our baby sister over us…? She’s done nothing wrong you idiot.”

Kaden took his brother by the neck and pulled him away, “She is sleeping, and that’s not possible. You know that. You both can be so stupid sometimes…” he smacks Leo on the back of his head before he sat down by the fire, pulling his knees into his chest, “…You guys…I think it’s us they’re after….”

Daren glanced at Kaden, his eyes wide, “Us…what did we do…?” He lifted Jessa lightly, letting her lay on the cool crystalline floor, making sure she was comfortable before redirecting himself to the brothers. “…the only thing I can think of is the fact that we don’t have any money…not that it really matters now…” he shuddered, rubbing his arms rather hard, trying to brush the feeling off.

Leo, who was still rubbing at the back of his head from being smacked, sat down next to Daren and sighed, “…it might be the hunting…maybe that is illegal or something? I see people hunting all the time…that can‘t be it…it just can‘t be.” He caressed his cheek for a moment or two, soon all three of the boys glancing at Jessa. Leo sighed, “What are we going to do with her…? We can’t support her if the police are around…”

Kaden sighed, “…we have to move…there’s no choice for us anymore…if they killed our parents to get at us…just imagine what they will do to Jessa. It’s not fair, but that is the way it is.”

However, the small family was unaware of the fact that a rather large group of police and townspeople had followed them up into the mountains. They had to destroy this family, it was for the good of their town. As Kaden took Jessa, followed by Leo and Daren, they came to the mouth of the cave, and as they looked around, the mob jumped into action, holding their muskets and swords and torches. "Hold it right there! You three are under arrest, and the girl is coming into protective services right now!" the main officer yelled forward, stepping in front of the boys. Jessa was still rather quiet, curled up with her arms about Kaden's neck.

Kaden shook his head, "You are not getting us, you'll never win..."

And that was the last thing that Jessa heard before her siblings were shot...

She'd been taken into custody of someone rather cruel man, someone that no one really knew that much about, Joseph Jicard, who was the town's blacksmith. He was very rough in appearance and even more so in his temperament. He hit Jessa severely a few times before she got tired of it.

Jessa waited one night when things were quiet, not even birds could be heard it was so dark, so peaceful. She put a few of her things in her bag, and made the quickest leap out of the window when she got the opportunity. She ran for days, unable to remember anything that could help her. So she kept going until she couldn't any longer, stopping about 14 miles down the road. She was tired, malnutritioned from being starved by her owner, and collapsed on the edge of the road.

She can't quite recall when she was picked up, but she knows that when she awoke, she was in a warm bed, with a plate of glorious looking meat and potatoes. "Oh my god! Food!" she started to dig in right away, so happy that she had something in her empty stomach finally. There was even a glass of juice on the table. With her mouth full of sustenence she moaned in sastisfaction. "Mmmm...." and when she finally swallowed her food she licked her plate and then looked around.

The place she was at wasn't exactly a palace, but it wasn't as poor as her home used to be either. It was actually rather nice, just as decorated as other houses that she'd seen around her. She looked at herself, noticing that she was wearing a rather nice and silky pair of pjamas, very girly too. She curled her toes under, was all of what happened to her a dream? She couldn't say for certain.

Jessa stretched her arms abover her head and made her way to the door, pushing it gently so that she could peek out. There was a man sitting in the chair just beyond the fireplace, flickers of red and orange light dancing about his defined features. He was an elf from what she could tell, ears just long enough to poke out past the back of the chair. Though he must've been leaning to one side, she could only see one of his ears.

And then he spoke, "...come child. Sit with me at the fire..." his voice was rather calm, not bellowing like her nightmare owner. Though his voice was rather gruff, he sounded old, but didn't appear it as she slinked over to sit next to him.

"....." she couldn't really speak at first, unsure of what to say, and then it hit her, "...excuse me, sir...urm...who are you?" she looked up at him with her brilliant blue eyes, sparkling with curiosity.

He put his hand up to her head, watched as she winced, and set his massive palm on her crown, "...I'm Jander Moonstar...I found you and brought you here, young one." He rubbed her head with a smile on his face, rather warm and inviting, "...and I want you to stay here with me..."

She nodded rather softly, "...okay..." and then she thought for a while, and couldn't remember her own name. She blinked in frustration, "...urm...my name...what is my name...?" she asked him, tugging on the loose fabric of his pants.

He nodded to her and smiled, "...your name is Mirabell. Mirabell Moonstar..."
